Memory - Linda Wells

First off I am going say that I am not going to add pictures of this book as it is a BEAST broken into three parts. I don't have the physical copy yet, however it and other written by Ms. Wells can be found on www.meryton.com/aha/index.php?showforum=47 and there are so so many amazing stories there and not just Pride and Prejudice.

Now this IS a P&P variation but instead of following the standard form of what if's and staying in the similar time line as the original, this story starts off with Darcy returning from his grand tour at the age of 22 and Lizzy at the age of 15. It begins with Darcy coming home and finding out that his father is going to die soon and he needs to get ready to become the master of the estate etc...to control his grief Darcy goes to Hyde Park and is just lost until he hears a laugh that breaks through the fog, can we guess who? YES! Lizzy. He overhears a conversation and gets some preliminary info about her and she in turn gets the same when a 10 yr old Georgiana comes running to Darcy. Here is the catch, they did not actually meet. They saw, noticed, looked and smiled and that was the end of it.

Darcy returns home and learns how to become the master of all that is his and Lizzy goes back to Longbourne and life there.

The story then continues on with various chance sitings at the museum while the siblings are in mourning and months later at the Derby where Darcy befriends Bingley. Over the course of two years Darcy has erected a wall and is working to become the aloof man we all know and love in the original work. Lizzy is progressing towards her combative self as well. Within that two year period Lizzy is semi-courted and left by a friend of Darcy's Mr. Stewart and Darcy is facing his understanding of duty.

The great change takes place when Darcy informs a 12 year old Georgiana that she must go to school for girls and she lashes out because she believes he wants her out of the way so that he can enjoy the society his aunt and uncle are forcing on him...in reaction to this fight Darcy wanders off into Hyde Park again and at last meets Lizzy face to face for more than a smile...the rest they say is history...sort of.

Over the course of approx 1500 pages we watch D/E court, become engaged, marry, have children, grow, love and develop. It is a beautiful story and the part that kills me is how in love with, not only his wife, but his children Darcy is.

The standard secondary characters get a twist as well as some new additions. So what I will do is give a run down of the character and who they end up partnered with etc.

Mr. Bennet - in this story is a weak man who as usual does nothing to curb his wife and children but as the book ends has progressed to a more mature man who strove through the whole story to control and earn the respect of his family.

Mrs. Bennet - instead of just being a flighty busy body Mrs. Bennet is a cold hard woman. She loves Jane and she loves Lydia and that is it. She absolutely hates Lizzy and has no use for Mary or Kitty. She greatly resembles many portrayls of Lady Catherine. The reason for this disdain for her children was their gender and nothing more. I won't go into more but she gets her cumupance in the end.

Jane Bennet - spends her early life in this book being told that with her beauty she will snatch a rich husband and save the family and all she has to do is smile. When D/E get together Jane becomes an uncharacteristic shrew of sorts and lashes out in jealousy. She is finally courted by a man, Mr. Harwick, who later breaks the courtship due to mutual lack of interest, her family's behavior, and a budding interest in Mr. Stewarts sister. She later is courted by Mr. Bingley but married Mr. Robert Lucas of Lucas Lodge instead. - Children include Lucy and others.

Mr. Robert Lucas - Heir to lucas lodge and as much as I would love to expound on him he has no major growing pains to go through - but he is a wonderful member of the mens club.

Mr. Harwick - Landowner, widower, father, initial suitor for Jane Bennet, later married to Miss. Stewart. - Children include two girls from previous marriage and son poss more with second.

Mr. Stewart - Friend of Darcy, ex-suitor of Lizzy, brother to the second Mrs. Harwick, husband to Miss Henley, attorney.

Mary Bennet - is the only sister invited to D/E's wedding with her father. Is given and takes the opportunity to branch out away from Fordyce's sermond and later married the de Bourgh heir Captain Peter de Bourgh. Children include at least one daughter named Rebecca.

Peter de Bourgh - long unknown heir to Rosings Park. He gains the estate when Anne de Bourgh dies but moves in prior with his mother to help care for her when Lady Catherine is cast out to the dower house.

Michael de Bourgh - brother to Peter who marries Charlotte Lucas and is given the Hunsford living.

Charlotte Lucas - obv does not marry Mr. Collins (who blessedly does NOT play a major role in this book) and does in fact marry a de Bourgh.

Kitty Bennet - is the next sister to go to school with Georgiana and later develops into a wonderful family artist and marries Mr. Evans who has the living in Kympton.

Lydia Bennet - Lydia is the typical Lydia at the beginning of the story but changes when she is sent to a girls school for hard to control girls and her only friend runs off with an officer to be left in London. She learns by watching what happens to a peer's family what she was turning into. She grows and becomes closer to Jane and later Lizzy/Mary/Kitty. She is the only person who her mother will really listen to during later events. Later she marries Mr. Robinson.

Mr. Harris Robinson - landowner/tradesman dealing in exotic fruit. Initially marries Caroline Bingley who after giving birth to their son dies from a fever after a forced miscarriage. With the birth of his son, Wallace, Mr. Robinson changes dramatically from a cold man afraid to truly care for anyone for fear of losing them to a wonderful character.

Anne de Bourgh - Anne is in a word - crazy. She suffered from multiple fevers throughout her life as well as bleeding that was the main treatment in those days. She ended up developing Old Maids syndrome which is essentially a mental condition where she believes that she is married etc. This condition was encouraged by Lady Catherine in hopes that Darcy would marry Anne. Obv did not happen. I won't go into it but I can say that Anne was nuts, but a nut to be sympathized.

Mr. Collins - heir to Longbourne and very little heard from or seen and quite irritating.

Lady Catherine - Bitch. No other word for it. She tried to use her daughter to control Pemberly and Rosings and lost it all as well as her family for her behavior. She ends in Rosings dower house alone with rare visits from Peter's mother.

Lord and Lady Matlock - I'm grouping them together because they are a formidible pair but are such an amazing couple. The growth they go through in accepting Lizzy as well as her family and helping D/E in growing pains in society as well as Mary and Jane and later Kitty etc. Not much to say but fun to read them all the same.

Viscount Layton and Alicia - they were a couple (son of Lord and Lady Matlock and Darcy cousin and his wife) through an arranged marriage. Layton began as a colossal snob but in watching Darcy's relationship and the love shared with Lizzy, he began to reassess and change things in his marriage. A love story based on watching a love story unfold. Children include Margaret, Frederick and more.

Audrey and Robert Singleton - Another arranged marriage (daughter of the matlocks) who had to go through the same growing pains as Layton and Alicia and to deal with his gaming habits and his family issues. Children include Grace and a son who's name I forget and more.

Col. Richard Fitzwilliam and Mrs. Evangeline Cater (ne. Harwick) - I'm running out of steam on this but suffice it to say another set of characters who fell in love and had to deal with growing pains, but in this case they were of Eva's first husband who was abusive and so much more, to Richard's war injuries and eventual retirement at an early age etc. Children include Anabel and more.

Mr. George Wickham - no I would not forget him. Rather than run off with Lydia Wickham tried to rob and harm the Darcy's. He was caught in attempted robbery and was sentenced to go to Australia...he escaped before sailing and attempted to kidnap the Darcy's daughter Rosalie and was later sentenced to hang. He has a relationship with Mrs. Younge in this story, who was sentenced to Aussie land for theft of Georgiana's necklace as she was a teacher at the girls school.

Georgiana Darcy - We watch Georgiana growing up in this story as much as the other characters. I do no know who she ends up with in the end as that is not made quite clear but she has a lot of standard growing pains we all must go through in finding ourselves and our places in life.

Mr. Charles Bingley - Is adorable and lovable and typical Bingley and we watching him grow as he learns his place in society, marry off Caroline, grow closer to all friends and family, is adopted as a younger brother of sorts to Darcy, and later Marries Abigail Martin (who I think dies, but again the ending is not 100% clear). Children include Abigail and unknown?

Mr. and Mrs. Hurst - truly likable characters and nothing like those fom the original work. Hurst is not a drunk but he drinks too much in the beginning to drown out Caroline and later becomes a welcome friend to the Darcy's and others. Louisa is not insipide or a milder copy of Caroline. They are wonderful characters in this version. Children include Samuel.

Caroline Bingley/Robinson - Caroline is Caroline. In this she has met Darcy but has never been to Pemberly. Hates Lizzy because she wants the first circle status not Darcy as the man. She marries Mr. Robinson as a result to save her reputation after a public ending to a failed courtship with Mr. George Wickham. She gives birth to Wallace and avoids her son like the plague. She later dies of infection post misscarriage that was induced because she did not want more children.

Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner - typical characters for most P&P variations and aboslutely loveable.

D/E - You'll just have to read it to see how wonderful they are in this and I cannot wait to own this so as to be able to read it again and again and again AWAY from the pc. Children include - Rosalie, Asher, John, Michael, and Thomas +1.

My only complaint with this book is the ending. The chapter essentially starts off with Georgiana's coming out and later skips to Rosalie's coming out ball. You get caught up on major characters but some are still confusing...such as what the hell happened with Mr. Bingley and his wife...did she die did she not etc and who in the hell did Georgiana marry. The first time I read this I was thinking that she and Bingley got together as he would be a widow but the second time I am not so sure....and short of emailing the author I am left to speculate.

I know this is terribly long winded and I thank you if you read the whole thing...this is a wonderful story and I loved it as much as I loved the others by her and cannot wait for he next book she puts out. If you get a chance go to the website above and read her work as well as others...this site FEEDS my addiction. ;p

I know I say this with almost all of the books I blog on when I blog on them, which I wouldn't honestly if I didn't enjoy the book to begin with - but this is a must read if you are a P&P JAFF fan or hell if you just love a good romance. *wink*

General Comment

I know I have been reading books - rather nonstop actually - but for the life of me I cannot remember a single freaking one of them...so rather than try to dredge up some memory of a book I read - we will start afresh if I can get off my lazy arse and tell you all about them. ;p

Happy reading.

Pride and Promiscuity - the lost sex scenes of Jane Austen

Ok I am going to be honest...contemplated buying this for the humor factor...so very glad that I got it from the library because it sucked HUGE! The best and only good thing I found in the book was when Darcy told Lizzy "No, I am rather partial to all things wet, Miss. Bennet. It makes going inside all the more pleasureable."

And that is that.

Perfect fit - Linda Wells

Billionare William Darcy is burdened with maintaining his family's legacy following the tragic deaths of his parents, must also attempt to restore his young sister's spirit after becoming a victim of internet luring by a former family friend. Elizabeth Bennet is a popular author of young adult mystery novels, written as a way of escaping first the behavior, and then the memory of a dominating former lover. These two lonely people meet at a wedding, over a broken shoe, and learn that once upon a time can lead to a happy ending.
Ok this is one of those books that as soon as I was done reading it I sat down and reread it again. I loved it. It is very low angst but the story is very well written and flows wonderfully. Not going to blather on and on about this one but limit myself to say in the world of Jane Austen Fan Fiction, I am a HUGE Linda Wells fan and look forward to her next book with anticipation and highly recommend this and the others!

Really Angelic - Enid Wilson

In pride and prejudice, Jane Austen mentions angelse several times. What if there were real angels inhabiting England then? In this spicy tale of Austen's historical novel, the romance of Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet takes on a bumpy paranormal twist. Challenged by the intervention of demons, dieties, can our favorite couple find the strength to forge their love? Will Darcy and Elizabeth overcome pride as well as prejudice, and find each other?
So I have to say that I loved this book. I was laughing so many times and as well as just enjoying the book.
I loved how both Caroline and Wickham both ended up loonier than a looney toon - his more in part because he was no longer a temptation angel...for Anne and Lydia! And I never would have thought of our dear Rev Collins hosting a demon. ;p Which lead to a truly humorous vanquishment of said demon - but leaves the question - what virginal fluids did Lizzy have to get from her nephew? *grins*
I did enjoy the idea of Lizzy being Mr. Darcy's guardian angel and how she came to be "fallen/lost" as well as Wickham's angel name (that was beyond a hoot and a half). But the relationship with Darcy and Lizzy was definately spicy - mmm library mmm - but also very very sweet.
Well done Enid - another one I am glad that I bought and will definately recommend because I enjoyed it so much! :D Thank you for the experience.

Fate and Consequences - Linda Wells

In Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Fitzwilliam Darcy fails to inform the populace of Meryton about the danger posed by having a rake such as George Wickham living in their midst. This was done to protect the reputation of his beloved sister; a sister he fortunately prevented from eloping with the man. This failure leads to heartache for him and the family of the woman he loved. In Fate and Consequences, Georgiana Darcy does leave with George Wickham to elope. Darcy finds her in time to prevent the wedding, but not in time to stop the news of her ruin from spreading. Now a humbled man, he must try to find his and his sister's place in society. A twist of fate introduces him at his darkest hour to the woman he otherwise might have resisted loving, and who helps him restore his sister, and his wouded soul.

So this is the second book that I have read by Linda Wells and I am loving her work. The standard characters who are villians are not so much in this book. The general theme is how are relationships effected by a scandal.

The Bennets: The Bennet family has a long missing aunt (Mr. Bennet's sister) due to a pregnancy...Mr. and Mrs. Bennet's reason for marriage is explained. Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are welcoming and have a great relationship with Mr. Darcy. In fact my absolute favorite part is when Lady Catherine comes to Longbourn to berate Lizzy, it is in fact Mrs. Bennet who gets into the fray with Lady Catherine...I LOVED it! Lydia doesn't elope with George at all which is wonderful and Mary ends up with Col. Richard Fitzwilliam :D

The Bingley's: I enjoyed Charles in this book more than in Chance Encounters...he is a "playboy" and immature but he has more backbone that the previous story. Mr. and Mrs. Hurst are entirely supportive of Charles and in fact Mr. Hurst has a good part in the story and it is explained that he pretends to sleep and be drunk in order to gain peace from Caroline and gain information due to her disregard of him. Caroline is relatively sedate in this book...she attempts to cause a compromise with Darcy and is truly dismissed and fades into obscurity due to her behavior.

The Lucas': Sir William is a flake as always. Lady Lucas is trying desperately to get Lizzy to marry her son John. Charlotte is so worried about her place in the house and her future she sacrifices her friendship with Lizzy to push the match with John Lucas. John Lucas comes home from his grand tour and assumes that because he's interested in Lizzy she'll fall at his feet - he makes several poor choices including listening to Wickham to ruin Darcy in Lizzy's eyes and gain her favor. He does learn his lesson in the end and comes to a better understanding of what a good man Fitzwilliam Darcy is. But he is the main protagonist in Meryton.

Darcy and Lizzy: Darcy sees Lizzy for the first time the morning after saving Georgiana from Wickham at the inn in Meryton when her bonnet is snatched off her head by a donkey and he is enchanted when she starts to laugh and fuss at the donkey. He later sees her again when they are exiting and she gives Georgiana a hankerchief. This is the catalyst that starts a correspondance and a development of a friendship and later relationship. Mr. Darcy is determined to marry for love now that he's found Lizzy and society can be damned, he won't suffer a marriage of convenience bec he saw how unhappy his own parents were. Darcy and Lizzy face the typical strictures of society together and grow stronger through their battle of wills with John Lucas/Lady Catherine and physical confrontation with George Wickham.

It is a very good story and I highly recommend her Linda's work.

Austenland - Shannon Hale

Please see amazon for blurb bec I can't cut and paste it and am too freaking lazy to type it all out. ;p
Ok the gist of the story is this...the main chick Jane is hung up on Mr. Darcy (obv who isn't) but is wholey ashamed of this fact and her great aunt as a parting gift in her will sends Jane on this exclusive vacation where she gets to play the part of a member of regency England. In doing so she discovers really is and meets her Mr. Darcy.
Now that I have thoroughly bored you with my stellar description skills, let me say this....I got a huge kick out of this book. Because there is an actual twist that is rather interesting that you don't find out in the end. Jane meets Mr. Nobley, an actor who is potraying a likeness to Mr. Darcy and in getting to know the "character" she discovers that she wants more than the fantasy but the real thing.
But my overall favorite part that had me cracking up (which is just sad for me) was the dedication:
"For Colin Firth...You're a really great guy, but I'm married, so I think we should just be friends."
Still gets me. After reading that when I downloaded the book I had already decided to buy it and obv having enjoyed it as much as I have I am glad that I did. Just got it yesterday :D
I definately recommend this one even if I am a shitty purveyor of plot! *wink*

Vampire Darcy's Desires - Regina Jeffers

Darcy's hunger takes the greatest literary romance of all time and reinvents it around the hottest publishing genre - vampire romance. No story lends itself better to adaption Two lovers trying to overcome that which seperates them: their pride, their prejudice, Darcy's vampirism, and the evil workings of master vampire George Wickham.
Ok so this is the second vampire Darcy book I have purchased and read. I have to admit that as much as I enjoyed the fluff of Mr. Darcy, Vampyre by Amanda Grange; I enjoyed this one more. This particular story takes place from the moment they meet until they over come Wickham and have their happily ever after.
I am not going to wax poetic about how this is the best book ever, because it's not. It is a good story and a very good take on the subject. Darcy is a half breed - half vamp half human and Lizzy is semi-psychic and they work together to reach their HEA against all odds.
I personally found Darcy to be a bit....martyr-ish.
Dunno really what to say. It was good, glad I bought it and read it...probably will read it again but not going to shout it's praises from the roof tops or even strongly suggest that someone else read it. Beh - not explaining myself well....if you choose to read it, it is an enjoyable read.

Chance Encounters - Linda Wells

In ane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Fitzwilliam Darcy arrives at Netherfield in a state of indignation and delivers an insult that nearly ended his future before it began. What if he did not go to Meryton that autumn and instead met Elizabeth Bennet later in London during the winter? What if their introduction was not an insult, but rather a challenge to smile, and how does the strength of an extraordinary couple help them to survive all that life sends their way?
This is another book that I read a lot of reviews on while I was waiting to decide if and when I would buy it. I was a little worried based on a lot of reviews of this book, but I loved it. I loved the story, I loved Darcy and Lizzy, I loved all the other characters.
I did not like how Jane and Bingley were portrayed, but I did have to admit having Caroline end as she did was good. No serious machinations were put into play by the usual characters so it was refreshing. Mr. Bennet was another best entirely and I have to admit that it was interesting to see him rather than Lady Catherine as the antagonist to the lovers. I enjoyed the additions of new characters as well.
Personally I loved this book. It was advertised as a "mature love story" and it was tastefully done, there were no overtly graphic descriptions, infact details were only mildly discussed, and all in all what was discussed humanized them.
Of anything that I would dislike in the book would be Darcy crying. Not because I deem it as weak, but because I lean towards not crying if I unless I can absolutely help it, I tend to be a little less than sensitive to those who do...so we will leave this opinion to my current state of mind not a general slight on those who cry, even dark brooding heroes from books. :D
I thoroughly enjoyed the book and look forward to the purchase of the next offerings by Linda Wells. Definate recommendation for those open minded Austen fans.

My BFF - Ruth Phillip Oakland

When Control Freaks Collide... Brilliant, handsome and born into a world of class and wealth, Fitzwilliam Darcy learned early that giving your heart came with a price even he could not afford to pay. Musical prodigy Elizabeth Bennet used the ghosts of her past to scare away all chances for love in her future. Sparks fly when they meet; but will Darcy and Elizabeth crash and burn, or can they overcome their fears through an unusual relationship and find a way to happily ever after?
---
Ok so I read a lot of the reviews on Amazon before I took the plunge and bought this book. I liked the blurb and the idea behind the plot. What I found in the reviews was interesting...some liked it some found the subject of sex too much, one reviewer even went so far as to complain about the mention of Darcy's "groin tightening" and his materbatory scenes....which for me was part of the appeal, because honestly, who wouldn't love the idea of Darcy wanking it! :D So yeah after reading the reviews I was all prepared for an over abundance of sex, masterbation scenes, and more sex. DIDN'T HAPPEN! There was all of ONE and I mean ONE scene where Darcy is going to town on himself....which was just as funny to me as I hoped, and the only other major mention of his habit was when he was a bit drunk and bitching about the size of personal lube tubes being only 3 oz...so all in all everything concerning sex was tasteful and less graphic than watching an R rated movie.
Now as for the plot. Darcy didn't majorly offend Lizzy in this as in other renditions because he didn't debase her looks, he and his cousin Geoff (No worries Col Richard Fitz is in the book too) are commenting on how "foxy" she is and she hears it. Appropriate apologies are quickly made and an overwhelming attraction ignites...but they decide after bits of personal information get out that right or wrong they should be friends instead. So the first half of the story is Darcy and Lizzy becoming "BFF's" (yes utter cheese that!) We also get to know the other characters and any and all supporting characters are named from Austen's other books. Harville, Wentworth, Benwick are all in security. Charles Hayter is Darcy's assistant. The Bertrum's, Brandon, Ferrar's, Dashwood's etc...hell to my every lasting delight Mr. Edward Rochester got a play!
The villians were so for various reasons, obv Wickham because he felt he got shafted from the Darcy fortune. His cousin Rebecca Wickham wanted to eternally mess with Darcy after their affair ended 7 years prior. Lady Catherine was par fore as in almost every book she is a total bitch. Caroline Bingley actually turned out well she was overbearing but not manipulative at all. Mr. Collins or Billy Ray Collins was superb in his villiany bec we don't meet him until the end. Frannie Bennet is a bad guy in this case because after a car accident she suffers from enough brain damage to not know right from wrong...so after meeting her you realize she is essentially nuts....
But it all worked out in the end and lived happily ever after.
I do recommend reading this as I plowed through it in a day....Def cute book!
